Sugar Punch, co-champion New York-bred 3-year-old female in 2004 owned by IEAH Stables and others, gave birth to a filly by Cherokee Run at Dan Barraclough’s Saratoga Glen Farm in New York on January 30. Sugar Punch is a 6-year-old mare by K.O. Punch – Wading Maggie, by Magesterial.
“Sugar Punch and her foal are doing just fine,” Barraclough said recently. “The foal did come a little early and was a bit weak and wobbly at first as a result. She faced some minor issues at first, but things you can manage and we did so with vitamins and staying on top of her with the vet. Sugar Punch has been an awesome mom to her foal and that is really helping. You had to figure Sugar Punch for the type to be good at anything she does.”
In 2004, Sugar Punch won all six of her starts for IEAH Stables and trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. and ended her racing career with a record of 6-1-0 from seven starts and earnings of $265,120. This is her first foal.
Sugar Punch is kin to the runners Mattie’s Code, a winner of two of seven lifetime starts ($12K); and Wade a Moment, an unraced 5-year-old.
Cherokee Run, a 17-year-old son of Runaway Groom – Cherokee Dame, by Silver Saber, currently stands for $40,000, stands and nurses, at Darley in Lexington, Kentucky. He has been in great demand as a sire and has sired more than 25 stakes winners with progeny earnings of more than $22 million. His offspring include Chilukki, a multiple Grade 1 winner and champion juvenile filly; Yonaguska, winner of the Grade 1 Hopeful; and Kafwain, a multiple graded stakes winner.
On the racetrack, Cherokee Run won 13 of 28 starts with 10 additional in-the-money finishes for earnings of more than $1.5 million. His wins included the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint in 1994 when he was the nation’s top sprinter, as well as the prestigious Grade 2 Frank J. DeFrancis Memorial Dash. He finished second in top races such as the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes and Metropolitan Handicap. He reached 100 or higher on the Beyer Speed Figure scale in 14 starts, including the final 11 of his career.
In 2007, Sugar Punch will be bred back to Forest Wildcat.
Forest Wildcat is a 15-year-old son of Storm Cat – Victoria Beauty, by Bold Native, who posted a 9-2-1 record from 20 lifetime starts and purse earnings of nearly $480,000. He reached as high as 117 on the Beyer Speed Figure scale as a multiple graded stakes winning sprinter.
He stands for $35,000, live foal, this year at Brookdale Farm in Versailles, Kentucky. He has sired 38 stakes winners, 10 of them graded, and his progeny have accounted for more than $24 million in purses from his first seven crops to race. His offspring include Grade 1 winners D’Wildcat, Forest Secrets, and Wildcat Heir.
