Acai, owned by IEAH Stables and others, most recently raced in midpack and gave way in the stretch to finish last of seven, beaten 15 lengths, in a $48,000 optional allowance purse at Aqueduct on Saturday, December 13. “He didn’t come back the right way and we’ll have him fully evaluated,” trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. said in the days following the race. “We know he’s better than this, so I’m sure we’ll find something. Hopefully, he’s not out too long and we have him back for some big races next year.” Acai, favored at .95-1, broke last from post position 3 under jockey Joseph Cruz, moved up quickly, but then raced in traffic at various times in what amounted to a ‘stop and go’ type trip. He raced clear and outside into and around the second of two turns, and in range of the pace (22.69, 46.49, 1:11.56, 1:37.67), but couldn’t offer any punch and faded from contention. Run with the Lark ($40.60) rallied from last early to win going away by 2 ¾ lengths over Take the Bluff, who raced on or near the pace throughout. Numaany finished 1 ¾ lengths behind Take the Bluff in third. Run with the Lark, a 6-year-old gelded son of Runaway Groom – Marc’s Lark, by Miner’s Mark, completed the one mile and 70-yard distance in 1:41.78 over a fast Inner dirt track and received a 90 Beyer Speed Figure; Acai earned a 63. The Equibase chart for the race read, “Acai forwardly placed for six furlongs, folded.” He earned $480 in purses. Fuhrever Dancing and Malibu Moonshine were scratched. The race was open to ages 3 and up which have never won two races other than maiden, claiming, starter, or restricted, or which have never won three races, or optional claiming price of $50,000. Benny the Bull, the nation’s champion sprinter in 2008 when he won all four of his starts, has been retired from racing and acquired by Greg James. Details are currently being finalized for the horse to stand stud. “I’m very proud of Benny the Bull’s racing career and have enjoyed it every step,” James said. “To acquire him as a yearling and watch him develop into such a brilliant and accomplished racehorse was a great thrill, and I really believe his brilliance can translate to success in the breeding shed. He deserves the chance, and we’re excited about it. “I’m appreciative of the Benny the Bull racing partnership and it’s encouraging to know that he’ll continue to have support on that end in his stud career.” James raced Benny the Bull through the first nine starts of his career, when his accomplishments included a win in the Iowa Sprint Handicap in June 2007 for trainer Jeff Talley. Shortly thereafter, James sold controlling interest in Benny the Bull to a partnership headed by IEAH Stables and retained an ownership interest in the deal. Benny the Bull went on to become a multiple Grade 1 stakes winner (Frank J. DeFrancis Memorial Dash, Dubai Golden Shaheen) under trainer Richard Dutrow Jr.’s guidance. His accomplishments included a second-place finish in Saratoga’s Grade 1 Forego when he finished behind Midnight Lute, who went on to twice win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, and received a lifetime-best Beyer Speed Figure of 119. He posted Beyer Speed Figures greater than 100 in 10 starts, earned a 115 in winning Gulfstream Park’s Sunshine Millions Sprint with six furlongs in 1:08 2/5, and once won a Churchill Downs allowance in 1:07 3/5 for the same trip. IEAH Stables and partners have retained breeding rights in Benny the Bull, and will support the horse in his stud career. “’’Benny’ always came to run and was long one of my favorites at the barn,” said Michael Iavarone, president of IEAH Stables. “He gave us plenty of thrills and his ability and heart cannot be questioned. “He was exceptional in his championship season, but the grit he showed in coming back in 2009 to finish second to a horse the quality of Fabulous Strike off a layoff of 11 months really showed me what type of racehorse he was. We’re excited to support him in the breeding shed, and were willing to give Greg the right of first refusal upon any sale of the horse and keep ‘Benny’ in the family.” Benny the Bull, a 6-year-old horse by Lucky Lionel – Comet Cat, by Birdonthewire, retires with a record of 9-3-2 from 20 starts and earnings of $2,353,430. He was bred in Florida by Tomoka Farms, Inc.
More from Blood-Horse.com: Champion Benny the Bull to Vinery in Florida Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Benny the Bull will stand in 2010 at Tom Simon’s Vinery near Summerfield, Fla., according to Vinery president Tom Ludt. The 6-year-old son of Lucky Lionel will stand for $4,000. Bred in Florida by Tomoka Hills Farms, Benny the Bull was purchased at the 2004 Keeneland September yearling sale for $38,000 by Greg James. James campaigned Benny the Bull through the early part of his racing career, which included a win in the 2007 Iowa Sprint Handicap in his stakes debut. At that point, James sold a major interest in the colt to a group that included IEAH Stables (Michael Iavarone, president). In the IEAH colors later that year, Benny the Bull went on to win the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes (gr. I), finish second in the Forego Stakes (gr. I), and run fourth in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) and the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (gr. II). In 2008, Benny the Bull went undefeated in four starts. He won the Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park, then shipped to Dubai to take the Gulf News Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-I). Returned to the United States, he won the True North Handicap (gr. II) at Belmont Park and the Smile Sprint Handicap (gr. II) at Calder Race Course. He was honored with an Eclipse Award and champion older male honors as top sprinter in Dubai. In 2009, Benny the Bull ran second in the True North and the Smile Sprint. For his career, he won or placed in 14 of 20 starts and earned $2,353,430. “Benny the Bull has been a dream horse--talented, totally sound, and brilliantly fast,” James said. “I’m very excited about his future at Vinery, and with the stud fee we have decided on, I think he will offer breeders a wonderful opportunity to breed to a champion at a very fair and reasonable price.” Benny the Bull is out of the stakes-winning Birdonthewire mare Comet Cat.
The name game: Greg James, original owner and still a part-owner of Benny the Bull: "Benny the Bull is named by my daughter Ericka. Benny the Bull is a cartoon character on Dora the Explorer. I guess she gets credit for that great name." LAST UPDATED: December 17, 2009 |

IEAH Stables’ Chief Broken Arrow, trained by Dominick Schettino, showed only brief early interest, tired badly, and finished last of six when making his most recent start in a $53,000 maiden purse at Aqueduct on Saturday, December 8. “He blew both front shoes coming out of the gate, but I’d never imagined he’d run that poorly,” Schettino said recently. “He was climbing down the backstretch, never got comfortable, and gave way from there. We’ll evaluate him and try and figure out what went wrong – you never want to send one out that performs like that.” Chief Broken Arrow, 18.70-1 in the betting, broke a bit awkward and fifth from the outside post position, gave early chase, but never really seemed comfortable, and was done early. He was far from contention into the stretch, eased by jockey Rajiv Maragh, and finished beaten 88 ¾ lengths. Squeeze Now, who stalked the early pace (23.28, 46.98) set by Al Sheetahn, took over on the lead with six furlongs complete in 1:12.43, widened his margin in the stretch after a mile in 1:38.31, and scored by 4 ½ lengths with one mile and 70 yards complete in 1:42.67 over a fast Inner dirt track. He earned a 91 Beyer Speed Figure. Squeeze Now, a 3-year-old old colt by Tiznow – Summer Squeeze, by Summer Squall, returned $3.10 to win as the favorite in the wagering. Rock Hampton finished second, 1 ½ lengths in front of third-place finisher Jump It. The Equibase chart for the race read, “Chief Broken Arrow was bumped at the start, raced three wide, tired badly and was eased in the stretch.” He earned $1,060 in purses. IEAH Stables’ and others’ currently have four juveniles making progress in their training under Eddie Woods’ care at his training center in Ocala, Florida. “The two year olds are now training very well, and at this time all are good movers,” Woods said recently. “My favorite for now is Karlita’s Way – she’s smart and tough. The Judge T C colt is very aggressive and I would like him to fill out a bit more. He remains a beautiful mover, and might ultimately be a turf horse. Jyoti Jump goes well - a strong filly with a good disposition. The Freud colt also goes well, he is just not as appealing to the eye as a couple of the others. We haven’t had any problems to report, and that always puts you ahead of the game when trying to get the babies to the racetrack." When ready for racetrack training, Jyoti Jump and Karlita’s Way will be sent to Dominick Schettino at Belmont Park, with the Freud colt and Judge T C colt going to John Terranova II, also at Belmont Park. Woods operates a first-class facility on 240 acres, and is widely recognized as a top horseman and consignor in the Thoroughbred industry. Please see www.eddiewoods.com for more. This son of Freud - Ferege, by Ferrara, was born at Dan Barraclough's Saratoga Glen Farm in New York on April 20, 2006. January Gent most recently posted a 2 ¾-length win in a $37,750 claiming purse at Monmouth Park on Friday, June 18, and was claimed from the race. He will no longer race for IEAH Stables and others and trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. January Gent lived up to favored billing ($5.00) by breaking first from the outside post position under jockey Garrett Gomez, moving to a stalking position outside, and putting forth a sustained wide rally for the victory. He struck the lead at the stretch call (58.09) and extended his advantage late to complete six furlongs in 1:11.23 over a fast main track, good for a 77 Beyer Speed Figure. Gulf Cat finished second, a neck in front of third-place finisher Precious Package, who raced on or near the early pace (22.32, 45.64). The Equibase chart for the race read, “January Gent stalked outside, bid four wide at the quarter pole and drew clear late, driving.” He earned $16,500 in purses. K’s Revenge was scratched. Eleven horses went to the post in the race open to ages 3 and up. January Gent was claimed for $5,000 by owner/trainer David Nunn. January Gent, a 5-year-old gelded son of Wiseman’s Ferry – January Angel, by Carson City, has a lifetime mark of 5-5-0 ($162,300) from 13 starts. For IEAH, his record was 10-3-4-0 ($101,300). Kip Deville succumbs to laminitis Courtesy Steve Haskin, The Blood-Horse After a lengthy battle with laminitis and several bouts of colic, Kip Deville, winner of the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. I), took a major turn for the worse this week and had to be euthanized at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky. June 11. Kip Deville appeared to be on his way to recovery in early March after having battled laminitis and colic for eight months. Foot specialist Vernon Dryden informed IEAH Stables president Michael Iavarone at the time that Kip Deville “has maintained good comfort level and a good attitude. He is in good body condition and is eating well. The right front foot cast was changed yesterday and the solar surface is now 85% cornified. Kip is at a point in his recovery that we feel comfortable sending him to a local layup facility.” But the 7-year-old son of Kipling —Klondike Kaytie, by Encino regressed quickly this week and there was no other recourse but to put him out of his misery. “It had been under control, but with laminitis, no one knows what under control is,” Iavarone said. “It’s such a disastrous situation with laminitis; you think it’s going in right direction, but it can change so quickly. This tears the heart out of me; it kills me. He had no earnings potential as a stallion; we kept him alive for so long because he wanted to be alive and he deserved every chance. He fought hard every step of the way. "It’s beyond frustrating, because things had been so quiet, and then I got that e-mail this week. I just wanted him to live a happy life; he deserved that. But when you’re told how much suffering he’s in and that he has no chance of living a normal paddock life, what else can you do? It’s always hard to make a decision like this, but the decision was made for us. All I know is I’m not going to sleep tonight.” Kip Deville’s health problems surfaced in mid-October, beginning with what was thought to be a routine bout of colic. But over time, the colic progressed into the often-fatal foot disease laminitis, which also claimed the life of Barbaro. “He definitely was a fighter,” Dr. Dryden said. “He climbed some mountains, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to get over that last hump. He grew a new foot on both front feet, but the hoof quality he was growing definitely wasn’t substantial enough for him to be a normal horse out in the pasture. And the latest bout with colic certainly didn’t help the situation. It was just too much for him to overcome. “He kept going forward and then plateaued over the last month or two. Just in the last week he started to regress, and at that point I knew we were going backwards. We had taken him out of the foot cast that was allowing his foot to rehabilitate about seven weeks ago, but we had kept him in those for so long the foot doesn’t grow in a normal fashion. Once you taken them off it’s either sink or swim. I would run up and hug and kiss anyone who could figure out how to cure this. It comes up and grabs you. Everything can be looking so good and then it’ll knock you for a loop anytime you turn your head.” Kip Deville, who made his last start on Aug. 2 at Saratoga, won 12 of 30 starts and earned $3,325,489. He also won the nine other stakes, including three additional grade I races – the Woodbine Mile at Woodbine, Frank E. Kilroe Handicap at Santa Anita, and Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland. He was second in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. I) at Santa Anita to champion Goldikova. Bred in Oklahoma by Center Hills Farm, Kip Deville also raced for Pegasus Holdings Group and Resolute Group Stables. LAST UPDATED: June 11, 2010 |

Life of Dancer, retired from racing with a minor injury, in December 2008 was donated to the New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program. Anna Ford, program director for New Vocations in Marysville, Ohio, recently said, “We are happy to have him because he seems like a nice and classy gelding. You can just tell that he’s a well-bred horse who took his job at the racetrack very seriously. He came to us well and will just have to adjust to not being at the racetrack, but he should make for a very nice horse for a second career off the track. It will be very exciting to see what second career, specifically, he will prove most suited to.” For more information on New Vocations, please visit www.horseadoption.com. IEAH Stables’ Pescatorio led from start to finish and left little doubt about the outcome when a 7 ¾-length winner of a $17,500 maiden purse in his most recent start at Tampa Bay Downs on Friday, January 18. Shortly after the race, trainer John Terranova II said, “He looked great. He pulled up good and is on his way back to Palm Meadows. He’s shown potential in his training of late, and could improve even further when we get him back to the turf.” The race was scheduled for turf, but was instead run at 1 1/8 miles over a wet fast main track. Under jockey Daniel Centeno, Pescatorio broke second from post position 6 and easily made his way to a comfortable pace (25.49, 50.66, 1:15.58, 1:41.58) and clear early lead following the opening quarter-mile. He led by four lengths in the stretch and widened to the wire, with Ready’s Clyde second and Thalian Hall another 4 ½ lengths back in third. Italian Fisherman, favored at 2.00-1, finished fifth. Pescatorio, a 5-year-old horse by Storm Cat – Morning Devotion, by Affirmed, returned $8.60 to win. He completed the distance in 1:55.10 and earned a lifetime best Beyer Speed Figure of 70. The Equibase chart for the race read, “Pescatorio set a slow pace under good handling, drew off when roused and was much the best.” He earned $10,500 in purses and now has a lifetime mark of 1-1-0 ($15,008) from nine starts. Mr. D., Misfit Manny, Bucket Head, Silver Eagle, and Sumphin were scratched from the race open to ages 4 and up, and reduced the number of starters to nine. LAST UPDATED: February 7, 2008 |

Lakin reacquires Pure Clan from IEAH By Mary Rampellini, Daily Racing Form, January 27, 2009 HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Lewis Lakin, breeder of Pure Clan, said Monday night that he has bought back a majority interest in the millionaire filly from IEAH Stable and Pegasus Holding Group in a private deal that closed over the weekend, making him the sole owner. Lakin originally sold majority interest in Pure Clan to IEAH last February. Lakin is very active in breeding, while IEAH has a strong focus on racing. "I wanted her back for my family's broodmare band, and they agreed," Lakin said of IEAH. "They were very pleased with the situation. They were very nice to deal with. I think basically, they're interested more in 3-year-old racing. I plan to race her this year and then we'll go from there." IEAH, which won the Kentucky Derby last year with Big Brown and recently purchased 2-year-old filly champion Stardom Bound, bought into Pure Clan last winter when she was considered a top prospect for the Kentucky Oaks. She was undefeated, and her biggest win at that point had come in the Grade 2 Golden Rod at Churchill Downs. Pure Clan went on to run third in the Kentucky Oaks for IEAH, Pegasus, and Lakin, and later in the year captured the Grade 1 American Oaks at Hollywood Park. Pure Clan has just returned to trainer Bob Holthus's barn at Oaklawn following a freshening, and Holthus expects her to be ready to run this spring. Lakin said turf would be the focus of the filly's campaign this year, with her first possible stakes start in 2009 coming in the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Distaff Turf Mile in May. Lakin's broodmare band includes Gather the Clan, who is the dam of both Pure Clan, a winner of 6 of 11 starts and $1,052,416, and Greater Good, a retired Grade 2 winner of $546,720. Running Clan, a 3-year-old half-sister to Pure Clan, is at Oaklawn with Holthus and could make her career debut before the meet ends, Lakin said. Running Clan is by Cherokee Run. Note: Pure Clan made seven starts for IEAH Stables and others and posted a record of 2-2-2 ($734,796). Her biggest victory came in the Grade 1, $750,000 American Oaks Invitational on July 5, 2008. Rebel Rebel, owned by IEAH Stables and others, finished eighth, beaten 4 ½ lengths, when making his most recent start in the Group 1, $2,058,800 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin Race Course in Hong Kong, China, on December 10, and sustained a fracture of his right front cannon bone in the running. In early-April, Rebel Rebel succumbed following a lengthy attempted recovery from a variety of associated ailments and had to be euthanized. Rebel Rebel since his race had been a patient at The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Equine Hospital at Sha Tin under the care of Dr. Chris Riggs and others and battled infection and laminitis. “This was terribly tough on everyone involved, especially since our experience in Hong Kong was such a thrill even though he ran eighth that day,” said Michael Iavarone, co-president of IEAH Stables. “It really stings because he had been in Hong Kong since December and it’d been such an up and down battle. He was a great competitor on the track and following his injury he showed a great will to live and fought for his life to the very end. “For this to come at a time when our stable has done so well, with horses like Kip Deville going out and winning graded stakes, shows you how tough this business can be. Rebel Rebel was one of our best runners and he’ll be missed in the stable.” Rebel Rebel raced 22 times in his career and posted a record of 5-4-2 with overall purse earnings of $605,835. He made the final 11 starts of his career for IEAH Stables and trainer Richard Dutrow Jr., with his prior efforts coming in Europe. His best efforts for IEAH Stables included a 2 ¼-length win in Belmont Park’s Grade 3 Poker Handicap in July 2006, a second-place finish in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile, and a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Virginia Derby. Stormin Normandy, 2004 horse by Stormin Fever – Patriotism, by Pleasant Colony, died on February 21, 2009, before he had the chance to embark on a stud career at Blanco Valley Stables in Blanco, Texas. The horse died of extensive internal hemorrhaging. The necropsy performed showed no definitive cause of death, but said it was possible a vascular tear which was not identified could’ve contributed. The horse had significant hemorrhaging in his abdomen, which likely significantly contributed to his death. In his career, Stormin Normandy has a record of 17-8-3-0 ($381,998) as a winner of multiple New York-bred stakes. For IEAH, his record was 14-7-3-0 ($355,988). LAST UPDATED: March 15, 2010 |

Willy o’the Valley won easily when returned from a July 2005 layoff in his latest start at Belmont Park on June 2, but emerged from the race a touch worse for the wear and has since been retired from racing. Willy o'the Valley and jockey Rudy Rodriguez lived up to favored billing ($3.90) after breaking second from post position 4 in the field of six, ages 4 and up, and stalking the early pace (22.70) set by Wacky for Love and asserting command while outside on the turn. Willy o'the Valley led slightly after a half-mile in 46.00 and blew the race open as the field came into the stretch and led by six lengths with six furlongs complete in 1:10.23. He then cruised under the wire a 4 ¼-length winner of the $21,000 claiming purse with 6 ½ furlongs complete in 1:16.72 over a good main track and earned a 96 Beyer Speed Figure. Stash the Boots finished second, 2 ¾ lengths ahead of third-place finisher Hurricane Mia. “He's battled injuries since his race last-July and has been very much on and off in his training since that time,” said Michael Iavarone, co-president of IEAH Stables. “Rick (Dutrow Jr.) did a great job getting him back to the races and we wanted to try him once in a soft race to see where we stood in hopes of rising him back up the class ladder, but based on the way he came out of the race he told us that he's done enough on the racetrack and he'll now have a nice home on the farm.” Willy o'the Valley, a 5-year-old gelded son of Will's Way – Lizzie Toon, by Dixieland Band, raced four times for IEAH Stables and counted among his starts a win in last year's Grade 3 Maryland Breeders' Cup Handicap as well as a second-place finish in the Grade 2 Tom Fool Handicap. His overall career mark stands at 7-4-1 from 16 starts with purse earnings of $337,754, including the $12,600 he earned for his current owners with his final win. Shortly after his race, Willy o'the Valley was shipped to Hunter's Run Farm in Holtsville, New York, where he is now under the care of James Rintoul. “He was sore when he first came out to me and we had him on Bute (Phenylbutazone or Bute is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can also have pain relief and fever-reducing activity and acts directly on tissues and its most marked effects are on inflamed tissues) for a couple of days but right now he is not really bad at all and no longer on Bute,” Rintoul said on June 13. “He's a very nice horse and we'll just give him a couple of weeks to hang out and eat up and then find him a nice home on the farm. I think he's basically got a slightly arthritic condition in his left front ankle and that will keep him from racing, but otherwise he'll be just fine.” LAST UPDATED: June 14, 2006 |
