Broodmares
Horse:  Broodmares/Foals
Abundantia
Status: In her most recent start finished third, beaten a length, in a $50,000 maiden purse at Saratoga Race Course on Wednesday, August 5. Objective: Sustained an injury in race, will be retired from racing to be bred.
IEAH Stables’ Abundantia, trained by John Terranova II, in her most recent start finished third, beaten a length, in a $50,000 maiden purse at Saratoga Race Course on Wednesday, August 5.
Unfortunately, Abundantia emerged from the race with a fractured knee and will be retired from racing.
“It took a couple of days to show when she came out of her stall sore a couple of days following her race,” Terranova said recently. “X-rays showed a slab fracture of her left knee and that will need to be stabilized with screws. The fracture is non-displaced, and she should make a nice broodmare but will be done as a racehorse.
“She likely sustained the injury in the race, and the crack didn’t really separate or open up for a couple of days to create the soreness. Dr. Patty Hogan will perform surgery on her at Ruffian Equine Medical Center and we’ll go from there.”
In her last start, Abundantia, 5.70-1 in the betting with jockey Edgar Prado up, broke third from post position 4, raced in midpack about three to four lengths from the pace for much of the race and gained in belated fashion in the late stages while never really a threat for the win.
Paracaidas set the pace (22.52, 45.14, 1:10.49) along the inside while under pressure throughout and held for a neck victory over Film Charm with seven furlongs complete in 1:24.25 over a fast main track. The winner earned a 71 Beyer Speed Figure; Abundantia received a 69. Film Charm, at .65-1, was favored as part of a coupling with sixth-place finisher Seeking Sunshine.
Paracaidas, a 4-year-old daughter of War Chant – Jade Aspen, by Jade Hunter, paid $12.00 to win.
The Equibase chart for the race read, “Abundantia saved ground, angled out in upper stretch and finished willingly.” She earned $5,000 in purses.
The race was open to fillies and mares, ages 3 and up, and a field of seven started.

Ferege, an 8-year-old mare, was a hard-knocking winner of seven of 25 career starts and finished in the money in 18 attempts. Ferege, a New York-bred, showed speed and courage in an abbreviated two-year racing career and can pass those traits to her offspring.
IEAH Stables acquired a managing ownership interest of Ferege in October 2005, and she is currently boarded with Dan Barraclough at Saratoga Glen Farm. She gave birth to Shock Jock in 2004, and a Wheelaway filly in 2005.
Ferege in 2006 was bred to Read the Footnotes once, did not get in foal, and the decision was made to breed her again in 2007.
“All the mares are very happy and healthy right now,” Dan Barraclough said in early-September. Barraclough and his wife, Kathy, currently oversee the care of 10 mares and foals owned by IEAH Stables and others. “They are carrying plenty of weight, their coats look great, and everything has gone well with their pregnancies thus far. The only real thing of consequence right now is for the mares that foaled in 2006 as most have just been weaned from their foals and that is often a tough time for them. Overall, though, it hasn’t been that bad.”

IEAH Stables privately acquired a managing ownership interest in Leniently in October 2005. She gave birth to a City Zip filly in 2005, a Judge T C colt in 2006, and a Grand Slam filly on April 9 this year. She is currently boarded at Dan Barraclough's Saratoga Glen Farm, where all of her foals have been born.
“Everything went well and both Leniently and foal are just fine,” said Kathy Barraclough of Saratoga Glen, shortly after the Grand Slam filly was born.
Leniently, a 7-year-old mare, is a daughter of Langfuhr (son of Danzig), a winner of three Grade 1’s who finished his career with seven consecutive Beyer Speed Figures over 100. Itsoeasy, Leniently’s dam, is a daughter of Belmont Stakes winner Easy Goer out of a Nijinsky II mare who produced Easy Grades (Honor Grades). Easy Grades is multiple graded stakes-placed and finished second in the Santa Anita Derby behind prominent stallion and former California horse of the year Came Home.
Leniently, a Kentucky-bred, was a multiple winner with an extremely high turn of early foot in her racing days. She won two of 10 starts and set a blistering pace in the Grade 3 Cicada battling with multiple Grade 1 winner Randaroo before tiring.
Grand Slam, a 12-year-old son of Gone West – Bright Candles, by El Gran Senor, has already proven brilliant at stud siring the likes of Cajun Beat, winner of the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint; and multiple graded stakes winners such as Limehouse, Fire Slam, and Strong Hope. As a son of Gone West, a proven sire of Grade 1 winners (Commendable, Johar, Speightstown, etc.) and sire of sires (Elusive Quality, Mr. Greeley, etc.), Grand Slam offers plenty. He’s already sired more than 60 stakes performers and his progeny have earned more than $25 million. In 2007, he stands for $35,000, live foal, at Ashford Stud in Versailles, Kentucky.
Grand Slam, a precocious runner, won three of his first four starts as a juvenile including the Grade 1 Futurity and Grade 1 Champagne and concluded his career with a second-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint as a 3-year-old. He also captured the Grade 2 Peter Pan at 1 1/8 miles. Overall, he earned nearly $1 million in purses with a record of 4-5-2 from 15 starts.

Objective: A return race has not yet been selected for Mrs. Anna B.
IEAH Stables’ and others’ Mrs. Anna B, trained by John Terranova II, raced with the pace throughout and proved game for a nose victory when making her first start since her July 2006 debut in a $44,000 maiden purse at Monmouth Park on Wednesday, October 24.
“She got me a little nervous for a minute on the turn when it looked like she wasn’t going to go on and maybe back out of it,” Terranova said recently. “But, Cornelio (Velasquez, jockey) got her interested again and she really responded in a very game race off such a long break. It was a very good race for her and she came out of it well, which is a major plus.”
Mrs. Anna B broke fourth of eight from the outside post position and battled throughout (22.09, 45.28, 57.84) with Who Fu on her inside. Who Fu held a one-length lead after a half-mile, but Mrs. Anna B gained throughout the stretch to nail her rival on the wire. Round Trip finished 3 ¾ lengths back in third.

“I was sick about this because she looked so great in the paddock and we were looking forward to this race,” Chatlos said recently. “Baze said that she got so revved up and was feeling so good in the gate that she just flew out of there. Her hind end basically outbroke her front, she stumbled, and that was the end of that.”
Baze and Ooh Yeah were uninjured.

Slew Motion, trained by Richard Dutrow Jr., set the early pace and weakened in the stretch to finish third, beaten four lengths, when making her most recent start in the $72,840 Broadway Handicap at Aqueduct on March 4.
“I thought we had a shot to win it on the turn,” jockey Rudy Rodriguez said recently, “but she just got tired on me late. She ran a good race, and it was nice to see her back on her game after her recent races that weren’t as good. And, the Inner isn’t her favorite track – it kind of just gets away from underneath her when she goes. She came out of the race in good shape and we’ll be in much better shape with her back on the main track and at Belmont.”
Slew Motion, 14.10-1 in the betting, and Rodriguez broke fifth from post position 3 and immediately made the pace (22.61, 45.37, 57.90) and led by as many as 4 ½ lengths after a half-mile. She shortened stride in the stretch once passed by eventual winner Waytotheleft and lost the place late to Great Lady K. Waytotheleft, who raced seventh early, proved best by 3 ¼ lengths and completed the six-furlong distance in 1:10.88 over a fast Inner Dirt track. She earned an 84 Beyer Speed Figure; Slew Motion received a 74. Towering Escape, favored at 2.70-1, finished last.

The Equibase chart for the race read, “Slew Motion set the pace along the inside, drew clear into the stretch and tired in the final furlong.” She earned $7,284 for her owners.
Magnolia Jackson was scratched and reduced the number of starters to 10, New York-bred fillies and mares, ages 3 and up.

Subtle Aly
Status: Stable profile on Subtle Aly is currently under construction. We appreciate your patience. Objective: Subtle Aly is at the In Front Training Center in Ghent, New York, and will likely not run until 2008.
Subtle Aly, owned by IEAH Stables and others, overcame a rocky beginning and proved very game in the stretch to come out on top of a three-way blanket finish when making her latest start in the Grade 3, $111,000 Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga on Wednesday, July 25.

Subtle Aly was making her first start for IEAH Stables and trainer Richard Dutrow Jr., having recently been acquired via private purchase from owner Alan Pesch who still retains a piece of ownership in the filly.
She has now won both of her career starts and, with $66,600 earned for her latest win now has total purse earnings of $91,028.
“Winning any race, let alone a stakes, is a thrill at Saratoga,” said Michael Iavarone, co-president of IEAH Stables, who celebrated his 37th birthday on opening day of the Saratoga meet. “To get it done with a new acquisition on opening day – and on my birthday – makes it that much nicer.”
With Edgar Prado aboard, Subtle Aly, 4.10-1 in the betting, stumbled leaving the gate and was then bumped in getting away seventh from post position 4. Prado quickly gathered her and the duo made their way inside to progress to a contending position. Up front, I Promise had snuck away on the pace (22.04, 45.44), but was joined by Subtle Aly and Blitzing in the stretch. Subtle Aly led by a half-length in the stretch with five furlongs run in 57.76, but I Promise battled back along the inside and Blitzing joined the fray late on the outside. The three hit the wire together with Subtle Aly best by a nose and I Promise a neck in front of Blitzing. According to Plan, favored at 2.25-1, finished another three lengths back in fourth.
Dutrow Jr., following the race, said, “That was a thrilling race. It was good for opening day. We got her about six days ago, after Steve (Asmussen, trainer) breezed her five furlongs. The first time I had seen her was today in the paddock. I had been training at Aqueduct and drove here this morning. As soon as I saw Asmussen, I said, `Thanks a lot. You’ve done a great job.’
“Asmussen said she would win the race and don’t worry about anything. It looked like she didn’t break too good, and Edgar said she didn’t feel too comfortable behind. We got very lucky today, considering the way she broke. She did show up as a racehorse. We’ll be looking at the Spinaway.”
Subtle Aly, a daughter of French Envoy – Aly Sweet, by Alydar, completed the six-furlong distance in 1:11.06 over a fast main track and earned a 74 Beyer Speed Figure. She paid $10.20 to win.
The Equibase chart for the race read, “Subtle Aly stumbled at the start and was bumped in the early stages, lodged a bid along the inside leaving the turn, closed the gap to gain a slim lead nearing the eighth pole, fought heads apart into deep stretch and prevailed after a long drive.”
New York City Girl was scratched and reduced the number of starters to eight juvenile fillies.

The following article updates IEAH Stables’ Subtle Aly’s condition:
By David Grening, Daily Racing Form
Subtle Aly done for the year
Subtle Aly, who won the Grade 3 Schuylerville Stakes here on opening day, will not race again this year, trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. said.
"She's got some issues up front that will be cleared up," Dutrow said. "She just needs a little bit of a break. We could still train her and go forward, but I feel it would not be the right thing for her. She's already accomplished a lot as a 2-year-old, let's get her ready for her 3-year-old season. We want to her to be able to compete at a top level."
Subtle Aly, a daughter of French Envoy, won her debut by five lengths on June 2 at Churchill Downs. International Equine Acquisitions Holdings Inc. purchased controlling interest in her from Alan Pesch and transferred her from Steve Asmussen to Dutrow.
Despite stumbling at the start, Subtle Aly won the Schuylerville by a nose over I Promise.
Dutrow said Subtle Aly is already at the In Front Training Center, a farm in Ocala. Fla.
Note: In Front Training Center, run by Michael Schrader, is actually in Ghent, New York.
