Schettino, 38, got his start in Thoroughbred racing in the mid-1980s, and worked as an assistant trainer to Dominick Imperio before training on his own in late 1992. His typical year since is one of 10-20 wins with limited starters and a connect rate of 10-15 percent, but he enjoyed a career year in 2004 winning with 29 of his 148 runners (19%, 41% in-the-money).
In 2004, Schettino's wins, win percentage, in-the-money percentage, and purse earnings (nearly $1 million) all represented career highs. Bettors were rewarded with a positive return on investment if backing all Schettino runners – something that can be said for several prior years, also.
Schettino in 2004 developed Galloping Grocer, a blowout winner of his first three career starts, second-place finisher in the Grade 2 Remsen, and a promising candidate for the 2005 Kentucky Derby as a 3-year-old.
Other career highlights for Schettino include winning a pair of graded stakes races with Serious Spender and competing in races such as the Champagne (Slick Twist) and Travers (Rank and File). Going forward, Schettino hopes to continue to upgrade the quality of his stock.
"I'd love the chance to be able to develop more two year olds, and get more with better pedigrees to work with," he said in a summer 2004 interview with Daily Racing Form. "Other than that, my goal is to keep winning and maintain a good win percentage for the year by running my horses in the right spots."
He generally maintains a string of between 20 and 30 runners, and is based at Belmont Park in barn #59. His association with IEAH Stables began in January 2005.
Schettino is a Bronx, New York, native.
