Richard Dutrow Jr.
Trainer
Richard Dutrow Jr.     Dutrow Jr., born in Haggerstown, Maryland, learned his trade under his late father, Richard Dutrow Sr., and viewed him as a great inspiration. He worked for his father as an assistant trainer at 16, and worked with such racing stars as King's Swan, a 31-time winner of nearly $2 million; and Lite the Fuse, a multiple Grade 1 winner of more than $1 million.
Since training on his own, Dutrow, 46, has led trainers in wins on the NYRA circuit in 2001 and 2002. In 2003, his purse earnings were nearly $5 million, which placed him in the top 20 trainers in North America. He won 132 races in 2003. Dutrow's stable stars, past and present, include: Carson Hollow, a Grade 1 winner of six of 10 starts; Saint Liam, winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2005; Silver Train, winner of the Breeders' Cup Sprint in 2005; Stalwart Member, a claim who won stakes races; and Well Fancied, a multiple graded stakes winner who won Aqueduct's Toboggan Handicap.
Dutrow Jr.'s biggest day clearly came at Belmont Park on Breeders' Cup Day in 2005 when he won two races and Saint Liam placed himself on a short list of contenders for the Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year. Saint Liam was ultimately named Horse of the Year and champion older male at the Eclipse Awards.
Dutrow is stabled in barn #10 at Aqueduct and has more than 100 horses under his care. About 50 of his runners are stabled at Aqueduct, with the others at various locations including the Palm Meadows training center in Florida.
One option Dutrow will give IEAH Stables going forward is the fact that he typically races a string at Gulfstream Park in Florida during the winter months while also racing in New York, and spends time between both locales.
Dutrow posted two of the biggest wins of his career in spring/summer 2004. Offlee Wild won the Grade 2, $500,000 Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs on June 19, and Love of Money won the Grade 2, $750,000 Pennsylvania Derby at Philadelphia Park on September 6. In 2004, he also trained Saint Liam to a second-place finish behind eventual Breeders' Cup Classic winner Ghostzapper in the Grade 1 Woodward, as well as a win in the Grade 2 Clark Handicap.
